What I found interesting:

1) The use of that dit-dit-dit-dahhh Beethoven's Vth morse code thingee in 1943 was an optimistic precursor of Victory. I had assumed that the V for victory meme including dit-dit-dit-dahh followed out of the actual achievement in 1945.

2) These days we fund wars with no visible financial sacrifice, no choice between paying the taxes and paying off the credit card for the middle class.

Jesus, Frank -- you mentioning the Vth thing has... Made me want to throw away my current essay topic and focus -just- on the use of the Vth as victory music and it's origins in war propaganda. OMG. Only I think that's the sort of project that takes more then four days to research...

Thank you for pointing that out.

And yeah, dude... No visible sacrifice? I thought my generations social security was theoretical now?

Indeed it is NOT. The program remains well funded and your fears are the result of the well oiled propaganda machine. To the extent that the government may need to make some guns/butter budgetary choices to keep the program healthy and meaningful forty or fifty years from now, well... it was ever thus. Remind me to whine about the history of funding health care delivery...
